Battle of the Bulge 70th Anniversary Commemoration at Eisenhower Presidential Library

January 16, 2015

BattleOfTheBulge2

Release From the Eisenhower Presidential Library and Museum:

ABILENE, Kan. – Veterans of the Battle of the Bulge-Kansas Chapter will commemorate the Battle of the Bulge 70th anniversary on Jan. 24 in partnership with the Eisenhower Presidential Library, Museum and Boyhood Home in Abilene. Four new exhibit supplements to World War II Remembered: Leaders, Battles & Heroes will be unveiled in the Museum.

A granite bench will be dedicated to Battle of the Bulge and other World War II veterans. The bench will be located in the center of the Eisenhower Presidential Library campus across from the Eisenhower statue. The public is invited to attend; pre-registration is required only for lunch.

The Battle of the Bulge, from Dec. 16, 1944, to Jan. 25, 1945, was the largest and bloodiest battle fought by the U.S. during WWII. The Battle of the Bulge was a German counteroffensive campaign launched in the dense Ardennes forest at the onset of winter meant to turn the tide in favor of the Axis. Ultimately, it served as a catalyst to ending the war in Europe and leading to the liberation of Nazi death camps.

Mark Collins, president of Veterans of the Battle of the Bulge-Kansas Chapter, said a large attendance is expected because of the location change from Manhattan to Abilene and the bench dedication ceremony.

The schedule (all open to the public):
■ 8:30 a.m., Registration at the Visitors Center. A group photograph of Battle of the Bulge veterans will be taken at 9:30 a.m., followed by photos of all WWII veterans. There is no charge for the photos.
■ 9:45 a.m., Call to order, invocation, presentation of colors, flag salute and greeting by Karl Weissenbach, director of the Eisenhower Presidential Library.
■ 10 a.m., Battle of the Bulge Veterans Panel moderated by Robert Smith, director of Museums at Fort Riley. Panelists include Wallace Jeffrey, Marvin Ledy, Jim Sharp, and Julian Siebert.
■ 12:00 p.m., “In Memoriam” ceremony
■ 12:15 p.m., Memorial bench dedication
■ 12:30 p.m., Buffet lunch including roast beef, turkey, side dishes and dessert. The meal is free to Battle of the Bulge veterans. (Meal reservations required by Jan. 21.)
■ 1:30 p.m., Free time to visit with the veterans; watch “American Experience: Battle of the Bulge” and “Secrets of World War II: Secrets of the Battle of the Bulge” documentaries; or visit the Eisenhower Presidential Library exhibits. Admission to the museum is free to WWII veterans and their spouses.

New exhibit supplements to the major exhibit, World War II Remembered: Leaders, Battles & Heroes, will be unveiled in the Museum and continue on display through 2015. The exhibit supplements include:

2014 Brings More Researchers and New Treasures to Eisenhower Presidential Library

December 9, 2014

ABILENE, Kan. – A record 856 onsite researchers visited the
EiseIkeStatueAtPrezLibrarynhower Presidential Library archives in fiscal year 2014 (10/1/2013 to 9/30/2014), breaking a 50 year old mark by more than 50 visitors. The new record was set despite a nearly three week government shutdown. Library staff also served 2,800 offsite researchers.

A new accession from the family of Eisenhower’s Abilene friend Ruby Norman Lucier includes Ike’s own freshman and senior West Point yearbooks, which he gave to the then Ms. Norman. Another important new accession comes from the family of Eisenhower’s cousin Nettie Stover Jackson. The letter from Dwight Eisenhower’s mother Ida to Nettie includes new details on Ike’s birth.

Archival processing and declassification work has discovered documents relating to NATO operations, psychological strategy, intelligence and national security matters. Approximately 107 documents were declassified in full (totaling 511 pages) and an additional 191 documents were declassified in part (totaling 1,388 pages).

The Thrill Of It All

October 28, 2014

“Why do you write thrillers?”

I get that question at almost every author’s event I attend. And I have to admit, the question makes a lot of sense. My first published book was non-fiction—Lead Like Ike: Ten Business Strategies from the CEO of D-Day. I’m a regular contributor on FORBES.com, writing about leadership in history and business—and I do not indulge in fiction writing for Forbes. (Heaven forbid!)

So, why thrillers? Because I want to to write about the basic building blocks of life—obligation, honor, love, courage, and pleasure. And be entertaining as possible so no one suspects I’m writing about anything substantial.

SachemPondSunset2013-2

In other words, I want to be like Dick Francis, a bestselling author in the United States and Great Britain for fifty years. Francis was an RAF pilot in World War II who became a steeplechase jockey in the UK. He was the champion of 1953-54 and the Queen Mother’s personal jockey for four years. (All this way before he wrote thrillers.)

Francis’s racing career ended in 1957 when he was only 36 years old. One too many injuries finally finished him as a jockey but launched one of the most successful writing careers of the 20th century.

As the Houston Chronicle once said in a review of a Francis book: “He writes about the basic building blocks of life—obligation, honor, love, courage, and pleasure. Those discussions come disguised in adventure novels so gripping that they cry out to be read in one gulp—then quickly reread to savor the details skipped in the first gallop through the pages.”

That Chronicle review captures the reason I write thrillers. What writer wouldn’t want to discuss those basic building blocks? And do it so entertainingly that people were scared (while completely safe in their armchairs), amused, and touched in their hearts.
